The Beauty of Warli Art, Traditional Folk Art of Maharashtra

Author - Mayank Rustagi

India is famous for its numerous traditional art forms, each more beautiful than the other, and the Warli Art is one of the most well-known of all.

WHAT IS WARLI ART?

Warli art is a style of rural Indian tribal art that is practiced primarily by the womenfolk of the Warli tribe of Maharashtra. Located close to Mumbai, they are the largest tribe in India, best known for creating stunning and eye-catching Warli hand paintings on the walls of their huts.

Their paintings represent scenes from their day-to-day life such as farming, harvests and fishing, worshipping, festivals, weddings and dancing, culture, beliefs, and more. The most common elements in these paintings include trees, flowers, fish and animals, sun and moon, huts and hunting, etc.

THE PROCESS OF MAKING WARLI ART

In its most traditional form, Warli art is created on brick walls of homes. While the walls provide a gorgeous red ochre background, bamboo sticks act as the paintbrush and a mixture of rice paste, water and gum as white paint.

Nature is a major theme of warli art, and the varying patterns and scenes depicted in these paintings show how the Warli tribe lives in harmony with nature. Geometrical figures such as circles, triangles and squares are used to represent the different elements.

Over the years, Warli art has gained global recognition, and it is no longer limited to village homes. Vintage décor online stores like Artysta Gallery have brought Warli art to our homes through beautiful handmade decoration items and home décor items that showcase the charm and beauty of this amazing tribal art.

THE EVOLUTION OF DHOKRA ART

The Dhokra art is another traditional Indian art form that can be dated back to 4000-5000 years. In this form of metal casting, artisans create metal figurines of humans and animals with amazing precision and detailing.

Though Dhokra art originated amongst the tribes (metal smiths) of West Bengal, with time, it spread to other regions such as Orissa, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh.
